Update Letter 7/8 Grade Art 4/9
Amazing Students, I know that this week has been difficult for many of you. Trying to read and understand what is expected in each class, doing the work, and managing your own time can be hard for adults, let alone for you as middle school students. I struggle when I take online classes, I imagine that many of you are the same. Know that I understand, and care about each of you.
All information about lessons and submitting artwork can be found here at the website .
I have assigned due dates for our art projects, but these are flexible. I will not mark you down for late work or put zeros in the Gradebook. These dates are just to guide you and help you stay on track. I would hope that you can do your best to complete artwork when possible. This is the same as how we have worked in the art room this year. I want you to enjoy the part of your week where you get to make art, I do not want you to stress over due dates!
My main goal for our class hasn't changed. My goal for you is to develop artistic skills and create independent artwork that you are interested in and proud of!
Because I know that some of you might be overwhelmed I am not adding any other assignments for next week. Please work at your own pace to complete the work assigned before spring break (Logo sketchbook and 1 of 4 options) and the Art Material Challenge next week. A good goal is to have these three assignments done by Monday April 20th. Make sure to email me a photo of your work-finished or in progress. Next week I will begin to hold weekly Zoom meetings for each class period on Wednesday of each week, giving us a chance to check in face to face. This coming week I am not introducing anything new during our Zoom meet, but have your artwork handy if you can so we can share with each other what we've been working on. I would love to see as many of you as possible! Check your email for the Zoom Invitation! Zoom SEAS Art Schedule Every Wednesday 6th Grade 8th Hour 12:30 7/8 Grade 9th Hour 1:15 7/8 Grade 10th Hour 2:00
Throughout the year we have focused on experimenting and building skills with a variety of materials, formulating ideas, problem solving, expressing one’s self creatively, and analyzing art work. Students work through a creative problem solving method based on Design Thinking. I introduce a broad theme and are then responsible for practicing skills, planning and executing their ideas. Some examples of themes we explored earlier in the year are Art with Meaning/Art for Change, Portraits, and Observation.
When students can make choices of subject and material they are more engaged because they are making art that is personally relevant to them. That being said, creative problem solving and coming up with ideas can be difficult for some students, especially without my daily feedback. During this time of distance learning, each project will have options with different levels of choice: Directed, Modified Choice and Full Choice. During my office hours I will be available for individual or live chat Zoom meetings-if students need assistance they can email me and i will respond with an Zoom meeting code. I will also be emailing students invitations to specific group meetings each Monday.
